Seth Godin once wrote: “In order to monetize your work, you’ll probably corrupt it, taking out the magic in search of dollars…”
In other words, when you choose to follow your passion, and make it into your business, there will be a point when the magic and heart will take a back seat to commerce.
It’s enough to stop you in your tracks, isn’t it?
It almost stopped me way back when I was contemplating going full time as a performer and songwriter. The “business vs passion” thoughts raced through my head at top speed when I was first debating that leap.
These same thoughts worry many people I meet who are just beginning their businesses.
The deeper truth is that until you decide to do something, all the deliberating in the world means nothing. Your business, as it turns out, is a lot like marriage. You’re entering into a relationship with something – be it music, consulting, marketing or coaching.
When you enter a relationship with something, you are almost certainly going to love it sometimes, hate it sometimes, obsess sometimes, and want to take a one-way flight to Anything-But-This sometimes.
This is what most people would call “taking the joy” out of it.
(As in — “Wow. I used to love sitting around writing songs. Now I just freakin’ hate it because I have to make money from it. I wish I’d gone to law school and just stayed in that Skynyrd tribute band on the weekends.”)
Will this happen to you if you start a business from your passion or purpose?
Yes. It will. Many times. (Minus the Skynyrd part.)
But, as with marriage, if you’re aware and committed to your relationship (in this case with the business, the service, or your purpose) you will move through this phase into a deeper place.
When I was a musician, did I — as Seth Godin describes — “corrupt” my work “taking out the magic in search of dollars?”
Oh, let me count the ways. (Hey, even Bob Dylan did Victoria’s Secret TV spots!)
But here’s the thing.
Many people have done this kind of stuff. And lots of them recognize when they’re being inauthentic, and they stop doing it. Some of them end up loving these aspects of it. It’s a part of the story of that relationship!
Besides, you’re only stuck in those situations if you think you’re stuck in those situations.
And this is not one of those: “Do what you love and the money will follow” speeches. There may be some truth in sayings like that. But mostly people think this means you’ll never have any challenges along the way.
Here’s the truth.
Regardless of YOUR purpose, the purpose of your business is to make money.
Many people don’t want to face this reality. But they’re missing out. This is actually another lovely element that can build that relationship. Sort of like when you have kids in your marriage.
For me, the most painful part of going pro was the bitter moment I recognized that no one – be it manager, agent, label, etc - was going to come along and rescue me so I wouldn’t have to deal with all that money stuff.
This was when I realized that if I loved my career, and if I wanted to indeed make a successful living at music, that I’d also have to learn how to kick some ass at business, marketing and money.
This moment of disillusionment lasted about a year. (Hey, I wanted to make absolutely certain there was no chance of rescue.)
But then my relationship with music (and with myself) got deeper. I got better at business and marketing. I got stronger as a person. My passion for everything got more fierce and, in so many ways, more real.
And that’s when I began to make much more money.
I’ve now coached hundreds of people who have created successful businesses out of their purposes and passions.
The happiest are the ones who step up and fully embrace their business and the importance of making money at what they do.
They go through ups and downs in this process.
And they screw up along the way.
But they use the relationship with their work, their passion and their business to Uplevel who they are. They stay committed. They stay awake. And they recognize that the passion part is really a daily choice they will always continue to make.
So, now, I’m curious about you.

Hey, I’m still trying to work out who I think I am. Obviously I need to get myself sorted as I am way behind!

Hey Alison:
You are not way behind! You are exactly where you are supposed to be. When I started Christine’s trainings (UpLevel Your LIfe, UpLevel Your Business, Gold Academy) I made the mistake of getting so stressed and depressed about where I wasn’t that I didn’t focus and take action on where I wanted to go. Relax, and just ask yourself, what is the next step, no matter how small. That is what UpLeveling is all about. Also, remember, don’t compare your beginning with someone else’s middle. And be gentle with yourself.

Alison – See “Another Alison’s” comments below! You will always be working on who you are – don’t let that be a convenient excuse-disguised-as-a-reason for not boldly moving forward, okay? (It’s easy to listen to these lies our monkey mind tells us!)

This post is brilliant! An aha! A lightbulb!
I’m still in the seeking part of what my own business would look like, and reading this I realized that I hesitate with some ideas because I don’t want to lose the creative joy of what I’m doing. This gives me a whole different take on it.

Hey there — you are an answer to the “blahs” today! For so long I have worked to generate a real business with a life-changing health product, and now that I have it … and all the responsibilities that go with http://www.MyMiracleTea.com. well sometimes the joy IS gone as I work it each day and develop it! Even when my customers express deep gratitude. Thanks for renewing my vision and helping me face the dailiness of what God has given me to share … with joy and purpose!

Carolyn – Yay! Do you ever take time to step AWAY from your business and renew that commitment to your intention? Sometimes that is a requirement.

UGH! In the middle of this struggle right now … not doing terribly well, but still fighting. I’m having so much trouble taking action, and I TOTALLY get that I am looking for someone to rescue me from the money part, BUT I also have (recently) realized that I can’t look to others for that rescue so I’m feeling good about that. What’s the next step??

Brooke – The next step is the next step. I’m not trying to be clever at all here. But the next step is the one right in front of you. There’s no next BIG step that will remove all the fears and “rescue me’s” forever. Hold your big intention – but always know what’s the exact next step you need to take TODAY? (Feel free to write it down here!)

I am still at the beginning of my coaching business and art career, still passionate about the work itself, still trying to figure out how to market myself in a better way and how to make it work financially. No burn-out yet, in the contrary. My goal is to have a cushion of $20.000 by the beginning of spring 2013, which would be 100x more than I have now (so it’s a tough call), and then quit my current job to dedicate my time fully to my passion. By the way, it’s refreshing to be able to talk about money without feeling guilty

I had to butt in because I noticed something. You said it’s “good to be able to talk about money without feeling guilty”. I spy a conflicting or limiting belief there—if you feel guilty talking about money, might that interfere with being able to attract it? It’s forbidden fruit. Why do you feel guilty talking about it?
Just offering some concepts you might want to explore, ideas that might be blocking the flow.

Great article, and just what I needed to read this morning! I’m just taking my first, few tentative steps into having my own business – freelance food photography. I’ve shot and styled a few small-scale cookbooks, which has been a (mostly) great experience, but the passion isn’t always there when I’m on a tight schedule and the shot just isn’t coming together as I envisioned. That’s when I step back and rebuild the shot in my mind from the ground-up. Allowing myself to be wrong at times and regroup quickly instead of beating myself up over it seems to be the way through for me.

I love this Christine. I am happy to say I was at the GOLD mastermind meeting and I know what i need to do next, stuff I don’t really want to face, but I know it will take me deeper with my passion and get better results. Today… Thank you.

I have the opposite problem. I am looking forward to the business part. I LOVE that stuff. I love the systems, and the marketing, and the money making. I’m chomping at the bit.
I’m having big problems with the clarity part. I love working with young professionals. I love managing them. I love coaching them. I love challenging them to see the world differently. I also enjoy planning and systems. Should I focus my business on teaching young professionals how to do project planning and how to build systems? OR, do I focus on teaching them how to live better lives using systems? Or, do I broaden scope?
Fortunately, I’m in UYB on module 1. I’m trying to get clear on my offer. I need help!

Nneka – This will take time. When you have a systems mind, you want the creative unfolding process to work like an equation (like systems and processes!) But it doesn’t work like that. Clarity and simplicity take allowing, focus and time!

Thanks a lot for the response Christine:-)
You are right. I’m all systems go (pun intended). I also know that Spirit needs breath. Creativity needs space. This is in fact what I am teaching my clients who are corporate professionals. We are good, but we get to a whole other level when we combine our proficiency with some space.
Wow! And there I have it! Clarity on what I am here to offer.
In Spirit,
Nneka

Nailed it Christine!!! Thankfully, I am loving the business aspect – sometimes it’s the “what will others think” part that get’s me while I am finally monetizing my gifts (that I used to just give away). One step at a time…

Alix – “what will others think” was covered in my last post! It’s a common one – and I assure you it will get easier. (After all, you have people to serve – who cares what the others think??
)

Developing the business side of your passion and making more money from it is a good thing all round. It shows you are providing a quality product or service that others want and are happy to pay you for. The more you make, the more you have helped other people.

Hi Christine, I know my purpose and I am definitely in transition right now. I love how I can relate to you and what you’re saying. I’m one of the people who want everything done yesterday and just don’t get why all the ups and downs along the way are necessary. Now that I’m older I’ve become waaay more patient with myself and others. I understand to not be so hard on myself really does pay off. Even though I haven’t perfected this yet nor do I know if I will ever or even if that’s the point I see finally that all of this hasn’t been for nothing and I acknowledge I’ve learned a lot along the way. I do wish honestly it had been faster but it wasn’t so enough of that. I am finally confidently ready for this next phase in my life and I am embracing full on. Now when I begin to feel overwhelmed I make myself go breathe for a minute and usually by the third breath I have gotten a grip. You will be meeting me soon, I wished it were sooner but I had to raise the $$$ to work with you… I feel you are worth every penny by the way. Thanks for being so consistently inspirational and REAL your new friend Daniele

Very thought provoking Christine. Anything that you truly love or have a deep passion for seems to take you down those paths of wondering why they heck I got into this in the first place. But I also know from my own experience, if you follow that passion and ride through those days of good and not so good, the rewards certainly out weigh everything else.
I’m glad that you shared you story as it will help others to feel that they are ‘normal’ and sometimes getting the joy squeezed out of you, opens the door to something you may not have seen in the first place.

Thanks, Christine. I’ve been in and out of that love-hate struggle for the past few months. My business is at a transitional point. It’s the financial part that gets me down, and it’s the financial piece that will help me to grow bigger faster. I just haven’t made the leap yet. Thanks for the encouragement!

Great post, Christine. I love the marriage analogy! It’s powerful. I’m sure it will help me as I develop my business.

Hi Christine, as always I recognize the truth in your words. My problem is that being a painter, I know what my focus is, I feel that I know who my audience is, and I think (!) that I am doing everything possible to succeed. BUT I have a hard time relating my business to the advice to those who are life coaches, or who provide many services. Somehow selling paintings doesn’t seem quite the same. I did take your UpLevel course and learned a lot from that, but I still have this dilemma. Any advice gratefully received.

Ahh yes, I want to be in La La land where I’m doing what i’m good at- Because oh boy, the joyz been squeezed out lately – splatterville – Luckily i’m also a major lover of learning, so i’m rolling up my sleeves and diving into UYB so I can sing la-la-la as I market my biz and love all parts of what i do!!! “I’m in the business of marketing ; )”

The comparison of one’s business to a relationship is my happy take home, Christine. Thank you for another insightful post.

I have had my business for 18 years and I have stumbled through the ebb and flow, the learning, the disappointments…..! I have been on Christine’s programs since the beginning of the year and have made leaps and bounds. Let me try to describe it…..my work/business is like a beautiful rambling wildflower field where there are clumps of beautiful, colourful, healthy flowers and there are clumps of flowers that are not thriving!! I am trying to decide which parts of my business to concentrate on an nourish, and which ones to just let go, because I love them ALL….. I am a painter, artist and designer, I have many things under my umbrella, which is why I think I am stuck! There is no clarity, there aren’t enough working systems in place, I am the perfect patient for Christine! Which is why I began her Uplevel Business Program this morning and cannot wait to get on the Q & A calls. The joy is not gone for me, but I have experienced a few joyless days where I have simply thought……maybe I should just quit, what the hell am I doing? Those days have been seldom since working on the uplevel programs, but, I am not there yet! On that I am clear!
