How to Blog Like a Badass - Christine Kane

Recently, I was on a video call with one of my clients who was getting increasingly hung up on her marketing.

She put her face in her hands and said, “Sage, do I really need to have a blog?” Then she looked up and gave me those puppy dog eyes as if pleading with me would make me change my mind.

But my clients don’t get killer results by me being a pushover. I’m a badass coach, and that means staying firm with my clients when they want to slack off.

I’ll tell you what I told her””YES! If you have a business, then you MUST have a blog.

Whether you have an online business or a brick and mortar store, your blog is a non-negotiable part of your overall business plan.

Without a blog, your website is like a PB&J sandwich without the PB. Yuck!

Your Business Blog Serves Two Purposes:

  1. It lets people know your business is still up and running.
  2. It’s an essential marketing tool.

When I visit a business’s website, I always check to see if they have a blog. If they do, I next look to see when their last post was published.

If it’s been more than a week or two since they’ve published new content, I either think they’re being lazy with their business (so why would I hire them?) or the business has closed!

Have you been dragging your feet about starting a business blog?

No more! It’s time to put on your big girl panties and use your blog to your best advantage. Your business and your customers are counting on you.

Here are 3 no-nonsense reasons why to you need to blog like a badass.

1. A Badass Blog Is Consistent

Consistency is key for any business, and the first place you need to be consistent is on your blog. Posting at least once a week shows your followers that you’ve got your sh*t together.

It demonstrates your stability and that you’re not some flaky jerk who’s going to disappear right when they need you.

If your readers can count on a brilliant, helpful blog post being published on your website at the same time on the same day every week, then they’ll begin to know, like, and trust you.

Consistency leads to trust, and trust leads to sales. Cha-ching!

2. A Badass Blog Offers Solutions

Unless you have a food-related business, no one cares what you ate for lunch so stop blogging about the mundane things that happen in your life! Seriously, save the sandwich pics for Instagram.

Your blog is not a journal for your inner most thoughts, and it’s not a place for you rant about silly stuff like how the barista at Starbucks forgot your whipped cream.

Offer solutions to your ideal customers and clients within your blog posts. Showcase your expertise and how your business is uniquely positioned to help them achieve their goals.

For example, if you’re a coach, write about your best motivational techniques. If you design jewelry, describe how the right accessories can boost confidence.

 3. A Badass Blog is Authentic

No matter what you’re selling””coaching, website designs, custom paintings, etc.””your customers aren’t buying whatever it is.

They’re buying YOU!

Let’s get real here: a quick Google search proves that there are a million other people selling exactly what you’re offering. So why should folks choose you over another brand?

A fabulous (and underused) way of standing out from the crowd is to be authentic in your blog posts. That means admitting your mistakes, being real, and giving your readers a behind-the-scenes peek at your life.

One of the best compliments I ever received came from a client when I asked her why she decided to work with me. She said, “Because you’re not that polished!” My authenticity made me approachable and trustworthy.

But remember, being authentic is different than “letting it all hang out.” You want to be true to yourself and your personality, but save the political tirades and medical oddities for another venue.

    Hey Sage!
You’ve come a long way. It’s so delightful to see your success! I love your vibe and your kick in the ass approach is just what I needed. I’ve been blogging for years at least once a week, but I just upped my game and focus. So I started fresh this year. It feels good and I look forward to really helping people feel better about themselves and live a happier life! Great post! Thanks!

  • Alex

I’ve actually never thought to check a business’s blog! Great idea and I’l have to remember it in the future.

    • Sage Grayson

Go to your favorite businesses’ websites and see if they have blogs. If they do, check when they last updated it. A business blog is a great way to see how detail-oriented and relevant they are (or aren’t!). Thanks for commenting, Alex. 🙂

Tons of great advice! Content marketing for business is huge and having a blog is a key factor in making that successful! I also think it’s a great way to connect with clients and customers on a different level!

    • Sage Grayson

Thanks, Kelly! My blog has definitely helped me make my business a success.

  • Jamie Molnar

These are super helpful tips – I especially love #2. It makes much more sense to offer solutions and advice rather than talking about random stuff that doesn’t mean anything (i.e. what you ate for lunch lol). Thanks Sage! 🙂

    • Sage Grayson

I have to admit that when I first started my blog, I was writing about silly, mundane stuff. But practice makes perfect! Thanks for commenting, Jamie. 🙂

    Hi Sage,

You list some great tips for powerful blogging. I do blog consistently, even when I don’t really want to. Like if I’m too busy or tired, I find a way to push through and get it done.

I like to have it posted regularly because, like you said, it lets people know that you are still around. When you go to a website that has a blog and the most recent post is from months ago you tend to wonder if they abandoned it.

Also, its a good way to stay engaged with your readers. People are busy and have other things on their agenda. If you stop posting they can forget that you exist.

    • Sage Grayson

Great insights, Lea! You’re so right that your blog gives you a way to interact with your audience. And those are the folks that become your future customers!

  • Erin

I so agree! I have several company blogs that I regularly visit (EX: PicMonkey, Nikon, BarkBox), and I have no problem buying from them because I get such good stuff from the blog!

    • Sage Grayson

Me too, Erin. A good blog leads to good, repeat customers. Food for thought. 🙂

  • Wendy Pitts Reeves

Goodness, Sage! Look at all these comments! GREAT post! :))

I, too, will always take a look at someone’s blog when I’m exploring a new business resource. If they don’t have steady and recent content, I’m outta there. Like – gone. If they can’t manage their own content, I have no reason to think they can help me with mine. Nope.

One tip that might help a few reluctant bloggers. If writing is like pulling teeth, just set a small goal of writing 200 words a day. Even if you don’t know what to write about – START. By the end of the week a post will have formed, and you’ll be ready to publish. Keep that up, and you’ll be ahead of the game, primed and pumped, ready to go.

And it gets easier with practice. :))

    • Sage Grayson

Thanks so much for commenting, Wendy! I love your idea of writing just 200 words per day. That’s so doable and easy, and you’ll be making noticeable progress every day without getting overwhelmed.

  • Hanna

Dear Sage! Thank you for kicking my a$$. You are the best coach ever and I love you to pieces and I love working with you. I love how gentle but firm you are! And I feel like I have no chance of puppy eyes. With you guidance I was able to built my design business from scratch. Xo-xo Hanna http://www.brulegroup.com

    • Sage Grayson

Aw, thanks so much, Hanna! I love you too! 🙂 You’re making awesome progress, and I’m so proud of you.

  • Belinda Basson

You can mostly rely on me blogging on a Wednesday…that is until today got away with me…we are on Summer hols and I only realised it was Wednesday half way through the day! I need to do some scheduled posts for the holls me thinks…

    • Sage Grayson

Yep, the holidays and other events can get in the way of your perfect blogging schedule. It happens! I use CoSchedule (a WordPress plugin) to schedule my blog posts and my social media updates at the same time.

  • Marie-France

Great post Sage! Since taking some time away from my business this summer, getting back at it has been a little more challenging than I thought. Thanks for the push and motivation I needed! You are a fabulous coach and I look forward to posting more great stuff on my site.
    xo

    • Sage Grayson

Thanks, Marie-France! Go slow at first so you won’t get overwhelmed. Keep a list of blog topic ideas and schedule time to write a little bit every day.

  • Dana Lynn Thompson

I am guilty as charged. My blog is woefully behind. Thank you for the reminder that I need to get on it!

    • Sage Grayson

This is a great time to get back on track, Dana. How about making one of your new year’s resolutions to have a consistent blogging schedule? You can do it!

  • Kerryn Hewson (Colour Your Life)

Great post, Sage! I’d really love for entrepreneurs to get hung up on the authentic bit before they beat themselves up for not blogging every week! All the parts of blogging from what to write to the confidence to press publish comes so much easier when you’re doing it from that authentic place of inspiration. And it’s a habit that you have to build like any other so experiment with a routine that works for you and forgive yourself if you miss a week every now and then.

    • Sage Grayson

Yes! It’s easy to tell when a blogger is being truly authentic, and that authenticity adds so much to their business. And even I’ve missed a week or two of blogging when my life gets crazy. It happens! That’s why we just have to pull ourselves together and start again. Thanks for commenting, Kerryn.

  • Nalana

Forgive me, Sage, for I have sinned…it’s been 25 days since my last blog post! Ack! I’ve actually been so busy “working” my business I haven’t had time to post anything. I started my blog this year and I never have committed the time I had hoped to to make it a regular habit instead of something I did when I remembered. Thanks for the kick in the pants!

    • Sage Grayson

You are forgiven, Nalana! 🙂 You can do it, just start with one helpful post this week. It doesn’t need to be long or complicated. Blogging gets easier and quicker the more you do it.

  • Erika

You are so right, Sage! (As always!) I’m still working on being consistent on my blog. It feels good when I am!

One thing I figured out is that I don’t have to wait to feel inspired to start drafting a blog post. I just need to start and then inspiration finds me. For a while I’ve totally had it backwards!

    • Sage Grayson

Very true. The best entrepreneurs just get to work no matter what. If I waited to be inspired first, I’d never get anything done!

  • Mallory

Step 4. Have awesome, badass guest bloggers 😉

  • Havok

The bloggers I love the best are the ones that seem like regular people who just happen to be a bit craftier than the rest. Yeah, it’s nice to hear from the people who seem to have everything put together all the time, but to see (what appears to be) an average person who makes cool things from time to time? That’s my favorite. I like to be able to tell that people love what they are writing about, because it not only makes the post more interesting, but makes me want more posts!

    • Sage Grayson

Hi Havok! Thanks for commenting. I agree, the bloggers who seem like real people are my favorites. And you’re right, it’s obvious to the readers whether the blogger actually cares about her blog topics.

  • Nancy

    Hi Sage!

Awesome post! Very straitforward and to the point. It was inspiring with just enough kick A** to motivate. I’m writing a post today and will remember your advice. Thanks! 🙂

    • Sage Grayson

Hahaha! Nancy, sometimes we gotta inject a little “kickass” motivation into our blogs. You have a great blog, and I’d love to see you get even more badass with it. 🙂

  • Lori

Sage, this is a wonderful article! Consistency is something that I definitely struggle with on my blog. My desire is to post three times a week, but that pretty much never happens. The purpose for my blog is to encourage women to celebrate their imperfections, and after reading this article, I’m realizing that to better serve my readers, I need to cut back to posting once a week so that I can offer the best and most helpful insights to my readers. Thank you for helping me come to this realization!!

    • Sage Grayson

Hey Lori! Thanks for commenting. Yep, posting consistently once a week is better than being sporadic with your blog. I love your writing, and blogging once a week will let you go deeper with an idea, rather than having a few so-so posts.

  • Coach Crystal Shae

Love this. I really know how important blogging is and will most def put it back on my agenda with me and my coach. thanks for sharing!

    • Sage Grayson

You can do it, Crystal! Blogging is your best business marketing tool.

  • Nell

Just the fire I needed to get started, Sage. Thank you for sharing 🙂

    • Sage Grayson

You’re so welcome, Nell. We all have an inner badass who’s just waiting to burst out. 🙂

  • Sage Grayson

Thank you so much for the opportunity to guest post on your blog, Christine! This was fun, and you definitely know how to blog like a badass. 😉

    • Christine Kane

I love your article, Sage! Thank YOU for such a great contribution. I think our peeps love it! 🙂
