Mindset First. Skillset Second: Why (More than Ever) Inner Work is Crucial for Your Success

Written by Christine Kane

Many years ago, I headlined at a popular venue in a big city. It was a great night, and I felt like a rock star. After the show, I was walking toward my car with an entourage of music promoter types carrying my stuff.  The conversation was lively, and everyone wore black.

As I was walking, I suddenly remembered something.

“Ohmigod,” I thought. “Deepak and Wayne are right there in the front seat of my car!”

(I had inadvertently left my collection of woo-woo audio books in my passenger seat for all the world to see.)

So I walked fast, opened the car door, and I shoved all of my friends – Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer, Louise Hay, etc – under the seat.  I wasn’t yet ready for my music biz cohorts to know the truth about me:

That I wasn’t cool. :-)

These days, I’m comfortable with my un-coolness.  In fact, I openly admit that the deeper work I’ve done on mindset and healing is a huge reason for the success I had in my music career – and now as the founder of Uplevel You™.   The best thing I learned from being so visible in music was that my whole being reflected in each and every element of my career. The same is true for any self-employed person.

I often tell my clients, “Mindset first. Skillset second.”

This means that your inner state of being and your outer success are irrevocably connected.  In fact, the reason we set goals at all is because of who we become as we’re reaching them. The “getting” itself is often the start of yet another journey.

If you have a true calling or if you run your own business, you’ll continually be required to deal with the issues of mindset, release, intention and growth.

Why is that?

Well, it starts with why you began your journey at all.  I once heard author Natalie Goldberg say, “Follow your heart, and it will take you where you need to go.” In other words, your heart’s desires will get you started.  But your soul will make sure you’re getting your money’s worth along the way!

This means that you’ll have to be clear about what you want and then release any muckety-muck that’s blocking the path so you can serve at a higher level, manifest more effortlessly and live into your true purpose.  It’s not always easy, but it’s SO worth it!

Many people give up on themselves at this stage of their upleveling.  They call it “failure.” They go back to playing a smaller game. They believe the voices that say, “Who do you think you are?”  They believe that their fears are more powerful than their intentions.

This past year, for me, has been filled with intense change and reflection as I move to a much higher (and deeper) level in my own work. The shift from being “little ol’ me” working out of her home to running a million-dollar company has brought up questions and challenges, as well as some confrontations with my inner limits.

Because I know the importance of being congruent in my business, I gave myself time and space to experience the voices of my fears, while staying aligned with my intentions and fiercely committed to my own positive mindset.  I used to think that one had to “fall apart” in times like these.  Now, I know this isn’t true.

These days, we’re in the midst of massive changes in how business runs in this world – a time where authenticity and transparency are more important than ever. Your commitment to stay connected to your inner core is a requirement for your sales, your marketing – everything!  Boundaries are being redefined. Marketing is all about connection and authenticity. And businesses that don’t understand that are falling to pieces.

So, what can you do?

Remember is that the only way out is THROUGH. When you are out of balance, disconnected and frantic on the inside, it reflects into your outer world. Unfortunately, there’s no magic pill for releasing an old ugly pattern that has blocked you for years!   But you CAN move through it and use your intention to let it go.

Don’t be hypnotized by your fear of taking action. Inner work doesn’t mean that you just sit back, get some energy healing, think good thoughts and success is yours. Strategy, planning and action are crucial to any business success!

Create empowering habits and rituals. Daily habits – like exercise, writing, meditation, gratitude – will keep you centered and connected to your power and your purpose.

Learn to see tough situations as something to be grateful for. Learn to say, “Yay! I’m getting the opportunity to let go of this old crappy mindset! Finally!”  This brings meaning to even the hardest situations.  It also dulls the sharp edges of fear.

Hi Christine,
This article really resonated with me today. I just had a lovely experience related to aligning my inner beliefs (purpose, ideals, vision) with my outer world (especially in my business). It’s taken me quite a while to have the courage to really step up for fear of “ruining my reputation” with “influential people”. And guess what? As you teach, the more I’ve outwardly aligned with my own purpose/ideals/vision, the more I’ve attracted the best opportunities. Also, the shadowy figures of influence and power that I was so afraid of have stepped into the light. I’ve discovered that, rather than being scary, often these people are actually supportive of my business style. Also, those who are not so supportive often seem to fade into the background. I wouldn’t have discovered this if I hadn’t taken a chance on myself first….and it’s such a great feeling :) Thank you.

Great share, Vicky! I see this same phenomenon over and over again as people come out of the woodwork to reveal their most authentic selves. It’s like the world around them feels relieved and so happy at hearing the real truth!

Hi Christine…love your story of embracing your uncoolness :o ). I used to be so paranoid about people reading the titles on my bookshelf…lol. The habit piece has been a real ah-ha for me lately. I find that if I have my habits in place…(doing things in small chunks of time)…even when the muckety muck comes up I can deal with it and allow space for it, and then go back to what I need to do. I think its because I have built a foundation of do-able habits, where before I found it really easy to get overwhelmed and let a bad day totally knock me off course. I now know that the muckety muck is necessary for growth and its not going away, but I feel like its just a bit easier to manage and allow. Thank you for all of your great insights! xoxo

Thanks Becky! The muckety-muck is just energy, that’s all. (And yet, it feels so freakin’ SOLID!)

I definitely need to power through my muckety muck. My twin sister is leaving this week to go live in Carolina. Good for her– sad for me. And I find my bad habits of listening to people think I am “not enough” after being born premature and overprotected my whole life have made me afraid to take the risk to be who I really am. One of my heroes, also a singer, said to me that I needed to just BE a singer after 30 years of wanting to do it, but my fear gets me every time….

Hey Karen – I’m not sure if you’re in my Uplevel Your Life Program or not. If not, head over to uplevelyourlife.com and watch the video I made at the top of the page. It might be helpful in what you’re experiencing with the fear. Fear is completely normal and natural in the creative process. (And yes, that means creating your life!)

Great post. I loved the bit about ‘mindset, release, intention, grow’. To me this means:

* Mindset: Decide to change your way of being by upleveing your thoughts, feelings, and belief systems.

* Release: Let go of the things, people, and places that are no longer congruent with who you intend to become (you’re authentic self).

* Intention: Fully embrace your new way of being, even if people think you’re crazy or you’re full of fear. Set the intention anyway even if what you want doesn’t seem possible.

* Grow: Once you’ve become rooted in your vision and are fully committed to it, things will start to work out for you. All you have to do now is seek out uplifting guidance, take inspired action, and stay open to growing even more.

Whoa! I love this blog :)

For some unexplained reason, I’ve been “off” this week. Maybe it’s because I’ve been moving out of my comfort zone recently and I’m experiencing riding the bike of discomfort, which I don’t allow myself to do very often. Your message today has reminded me of why I should never want to go back to playing small, that my daily habits are what protect me from distraction and vulnerability to those fear voices, and that I’m one step closer to saying good-bye to this crappy old mindset – that is worth cheering about!

p.s. I love that you used the word “fiercely” – it got me fired up and changed my whole outlook today!

p.p.s. I’ll never get tired of the bike metaphor. Everytime I feel like I’m experiencing a new shift, I think of that bike and it’s not so scary anymore.

I was JUST talking about this very thing with a friend this weekend. When we commit to going really deep, planning for the long-term and dealing with all the grossness that comes up when we do, the more surface-level shifts happen almost easily. It’s so much more effective than always staying at that surface level. It provides a really strong foundation (actually, the roots metaphor really works here, I think), and makes all the higher-level stuff full of ease. Or at least more full of ease than it would have been otherwise.

Being one who’s spent most of her life being completely okay (or at least used to) with being uncool, I suppose I’ve been practicing the mindset piece for a very long time. The point at which I really started going deeper and experiencing a clear upleveling that was palpable came when I began giving voice to my purpose. Once that happened, it seemed that I had no choice but to continue living into it. I love what you’ve said here and your concise way on bottom-lining this part of the process. You rock!

Beautiful, true and brilliant as ever, dearest Christine. I told a friend of mine about you this weekend. And about how much your voice resonates with me. One of these days, I am planning on taking one of your workshops. I set a huge fear aside when I walked away from my 6-figure income, super easy, work from home job after 12 years. I am still shocked (it’s only been 3 weeks) and yet, I have never ever felt richer. (And I am a material girl, no apologies :) )!. And I know now more than ever what you mean here in this post. I think one other thing that helps me is that I AM GOING TO MAKE IT. There is no other option. There is no other route. And that is the only way that this is all going to unfold. The conviction pushes me through. Thank you so much for this post, brilliant and savvy Christine!

Hi Christine,

This is such a spot-on post! I think your un-coolness definitely paid off:-)

More and more people are realizing that mindset comes first because it determines what we do and how we do it. I’ve “failed” in a lot of things in my life and in none for of a lack of hard work. It would always seem to end up the same, something outside of my control would “burn me” or I’d do it myself if I was very close to success. It wasn’t until I realized that my intentions weren’t clear, that my inner talk was less than positive and less than clear, that I began to succeed more and more in things I did.

It’s a beautiful message you’re putting out there and I sincerely thank you!

All the best,

Josip Barbaric

Sure.creating positive habits and healthy rituals that proper you ahead is crucial. Its common to hold on to poor daily habits that turn out empty and only serve to “nail you in the head” at times without even realizing.

Hello Christine (from one Asheville “girl” to another :-)
And Thank You! You have no idea how perfect this article is for me at this precise moment. Mindset! of course! I especially love the statement “my whole being reflected in each and every element of my career”. Mindset first, Skillset second. I am currently in a challenging but very gratifying phase of examining every aspect of career and your advice is having a very powerful effect today.
Okay, I’m off to find you on facebook!
Best wishes, Annie
( ps. I’d love to read more about the concept of being congruent. )
