Christine,
I watched this a couple of days ago – it’s so moving as to really making that connection to what we do. I keep coming back to this idea of “inside out” – and how that can really become a part of our life. And when it does….wow!! “WHY”. One word that can make such a lasting difference!!

This gave me chills. During the talk I just gave in MI I spoke about the ‘what, how and why’ of what we do in the NICU. Watching this was a deep affirmation of that concept. Thanks so much for posting it. It made my work this morning take on such clarity. :)

Aha! Now I know when I talk about “what” my art is, why it is so difficult and why people seem uninterested. When I talk about why I do it and my passion for it, my words flow and people get swept up in the passion. Sometimes you just need someone to lay it out for you! Thanks for posting this!

250K people on the mall came from a lot of organizing that apparently the presenter does not know about. MLK worked with Bayard Rustin – a brilliant, communist, gay black organizer. This presentation, at least in this one instance – the one I know inside and out – is mythology at it’s best. It’s like not knowing that a week before Rosa Parks (calculatedly) refused to move to the back of the bus, a young unmarried black woman did the same thing, but was not the one on whom to build a movement. Rosa Parks was a Highlander-trained activist. People showed up on the mall because of brilliant organizing using black churches as foundations of the movement. Each church committed to x people to any particular event. And they were held accountable for it. This is not to take anything away from MLK’s courageous in-the-public leadership. In the end any movement must have a public face. It is merely to say that there’s more to this story, and people should know all of it. Not just what makes a theory seem to work.

I have not checked into your blog in sometime Christine, and now I am reminded yet again of why I should. At a time when I am re-imagining my work, this couldn’t be more brilliant: “What you do is simply the proof of what you believe”. Not only will it help to ‘sell’ whatever it is you create, but the alignment of belief/passion with appropriate action must lead to a happier existence…maybe the ONLY way of achieving a happy existence. Thanks for bringing this to us. (It might also explain why I have been reluctant to give up my iphone, even though I use only a few of the features and the battery is on the fritz!)

“We follow those who lead, not for them, but for ourselves. And it’s those who start with “why” that have the ability to inspire those around them or find others who inspire them.”
I just needed to be reminded :-) Thanks for sharing!

I just watched that the other day and it was inspiring. My why is the reason I do what I do, so thankfully that part fuels my every day.

Very cool! Thanks for posting! My wife works for Marshall Ganz, a long-time organizer and lecturer at Harvard’s Kennedy School, and he talks about these very things when he teaches people how to organize. He breaks it down, however, into the Story of Self, the Story of Us, and the Story of Now….and though the applications are a wee bit different, the sharing of the Why is *huge* to the success of the outcomes.

This just made my morning.

Christine, this is awesome! I know I’ve got some powerful passions inside- Simon’s talk helped me to get clarity on what exactly they are all about and why it’s important for me to understand them as best as I can. So inspiring! I love your site. Thank you.

As I’ve thought about this, I realized your WHY, “You can take good care of yourself and be successful. In fact, you need to take good care of yourself in order to have true success,” is what attracts me to your work. It’s been so life enhancing!

I’m also thinking about what other successful companies’ WHY’s are, like Trader Joe’s. It’s a fun way to solidify this concept in my consciousness.

This concept leads me to think that if I truly follow my passion then I will be successful – because when you share what you are passionate about you are naturally sharing your “why”. As I am embarking TODAY on the first day of my new career…..one that is only about my passion, who I truly am and sharing it to better the lives of others…..this video is magical, just what I needed on my first day. Thank you for making an impact.

Thank you for sharing this talk. I’ve always “known” this but didn’t quite understand the power of it. I’m going to work on explaining my “why” even more clearly.

Thanks for pointing to this. Simple yet profound. What hits me is that we don’t fool ourselves either. We don’t even follow ourselves unless we connect with the why, do we?
