Quotes of the Week - Christine Kane

It was one of those weeks where I kept hearing and reading little aha’s and cool snippets all over the place. I love it when that happens!

Sharing a few with you…

“Honestly, I love that the economy is what it is right now. I love that people are having to reevaluate everything at an emotional level because it is far better than everyone being on autopilot.”

Sheri McConnell, President & Founder of 3 National and International Associations…in her eZine.

————–

“Don’t be distracted by criticism. Remember-the only taste of success some people have when they take a bite out of you.”

Zig Ziglar, author, motivational speaker… uttered a long time ago, but someone just quoted it to me this week.

————-

“I have an increasing awareness about how incremental true progress actually is. It’s not so much about making huge leaps, but about taking little steps consistently and connecting them together. On all fronts – school, friends, job, dance – I’m trying to just remind myself to take a little step every day (or, regularly) and that the important thing is to take another step again tomorrow. That consistency is so important.

In that vein, last week I was really knocked off my stride. But, rather than staying down, I am back on my feet this week. Which I am more proud of than anything.”

– one of my platinum coaching members… on her coaching form before our call this week.

————-

“So many friends arrive when you stop making love to enemies.”

David Neagle, author and Success Coach… on Facebook

————-

“In down economies, the only thing that’s going to change things is changing things. This is hard for a lot of marketers who are used to defending the status quo, but it’s truly the best option.

If you’re not happy with what you’ve got, what radical changes are you willing to make to change what you’re getting?”

Seth Godin, God of All Things Marketing… on his blog

————–

“Crickets! We heard crickets. When you leave a game with Duke on the road and you hear crickets, you know you did your job.”

Danny Green, UNC Basketball Player… in an interview about the Tarheels victory over Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium

    From the Talmud:

I do love many that those above have contributed. Currently, I’m riding on:

“Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill

    add to that

“You can only be what your fantasy wants you to be.” Anon.

I’m painting that on my studio wall.

“Take care of yourself. If you don’t, no one else will.”

I learned this from Kathy Rettig, my Grad School advisor. I don’t know if this wisdom is hers, or she heard it from someone else. She repeated it often to me, and it was one of the best lessons I learned in Grad School (if I really learned it! I am glad to remember it!)

It is very true and inspiring advice to me. Especially when I feel ‘shrinky’. 🙂 As another commenter said-it’s great to share in this community of like-minded souls.

I think you hear/read quotes when you need the message. Recently I read, “There’s a reason why we have two ears and only one mouth.” (can’t remember the source!!) I think I need to be listening more.

    My favorites?

    Hi Christine,

Those are some good ones! I especially like the one about the economy. It’s wonderful to hear someone talk about it as a potential positive change. And my favorite quote?

Never give up. And never, under any circumstances, face the facts. – Ruth Gordon

  • Mary Miller

Thanks for sharing all these inspirations! A quote that has changed my life is from Mary Engelbrite (sp?) “Worrying does not empty tomorrow of it’s troubles~ it empties today of its strength”. I had adopted it as a part of my life, and serendipity lead me to a yard sale – where I found a lovely pillow with the quote on it. 🙂

Great quotes – thanks for sharing.
Here are few I stumbled upon and had my aha moments with…

“You will launch many projects, but have time to finish only a few. So think, plan, develop, launch and tap good people to be responsible. Give them authority and hold them accountable. Trying to do too much yourself creates a bottleneck.”

    — Donald Rumsfeld (astonishingly enough 🙂

“What a wonderful life I’ve had!
I only wish I’d realized it sooner.”
    — Colette

“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.”
    –Charles Kingsley

“Today is life – the only life you are sure of. Make the most of today. Get interested in something. Shake yourself awake. Develop a hobby. Let the winds of enthusiasm sweep through you. Live today with gusto.”
    –Dale Carnegie

“Good habits are worth being fanatical about. ”
    John Irving

In the journal I do not just express myself more openly than I could do to any person; I create myself – Susan Sontag

    Love this!
Thought I’d share one of my favorites. I do not know it’s origin.

“With awareness, you give yourself the gift of an opening for growth and change. Do not criticize yourself because in darkness you could not see.”

    Hey Christine!

I know what you mean – I’ve found myself going over and over them. They really speak to where I am right now as well as the quote you contributed about staying true to and honoring the little steps. It really is that consistency that makes a wonderful practice of showing up in and for life 🙂

If anyone is interested in these inspiring recordings I got them from New Dimensions Media (where they were originally recorded) at this link – http://www.newdimensions.org/search.php?q=the+wisdom+of+joseph+campbell&Submit=Search&select3=

Christine thanks for being such a great example of courage!

I love these quotes by Wayne Dyer:
    “Live…be you…enjoy…love.”
“Life is an attitude. It’s what you choose to believe, always.”
“Our days are the precious currency of our lives.”
“Each problem is an opportunity in disguise.”

    Hey Christine!

These are all great quotes – thanks for that! I’d thought I’d share some that I came across while writing an article on Joseph Campbell that turned up in some audio interviews I was listening to – they struck me a quite profound 🙂

“Opportunities to find deeper powers within ourselves come when life seems most challenging.”

“It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure.”

“Participate joyfully in the sorrows of the world. We cannot cure the world of sorrows, but we can choose to live in joy.”

    Thanks to all!

Tracy – that’s probably my favorite quote of all time — as it is for so many. thanks for sharing it here!

    Hi Christine,
I think a whole lot of people know this quote, but I find myself returning to it year after year. It was written by Marianne Williamson and quoted by Nelson Mandela.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
Thanks for all the inspiration everyone!-Tracy

    Don’t complain and don’t explain.

I think this is attributed to Katherine Hepburn and it’s a good one.

Go where you are celebrated, not where you are tolerated.

I found this quote on Serena William’s site and it is directly applicable to me now.

Christine, Thanks as always for all the good material this week. I love the quotes – I’m building my own quotation library and will happily be adding these!

I also wondered, very off topic, where you get the photos you use on your blog. They are very appropo and I wondered if you use commons photos from online or take photos…

Thought I’d share two of my favorite quotes — these are from Christine Mason MIller at http://swirlygirl.typepad.com/swirly_girl/

“On any given day, you have the power to say: This is not how the story is going to end.”

“Many years ago, in the midst of one of the most challenging episodes of my life, a dear friend said seven small words to me: All you have to do is receive.”

    Have a wonderful day!

One of my favorite quotes is “Before you speak, ask yourself: Is it true? Is it kind? Does it improve upon the silence?”

I’m afraid I don’t think what I’m about to say exactly *improves* upon the silence but Laura’s comment certainly gave me pause to wonder how often Elizabeth Gilbert gets mistaken for Melissa Gilbert. There is something about their “fresh-scrubbed” good looks that carries a resemblance, I think. And I thought her hair looked adorable!

  • Laura

    Hi, Christine!

I dropped by to make a really profound observation about the video clip from Melissa Gilbert. Admidst all the confusion in today’s highly competitive economy, there is one factor that doesn’t matter in your success as a writer, entrepreneur, or whatever. Ms. Gilbert makes is so clear that having stringy hair is not an obstacle to success. That makes me feel empowered. 😉 Hugs!

I relish quotes. Thanks for this collection. This week I found wisdom in a quote by Donna Farhi using increment and the breath:
“The point is not to control the breath or to control the situation but to use the regular, metronomlike availability of our breath to remind us of the place inside us that is always steady. The breath then becomes like a companion that is always reminding us of who we are. When we bring ourselves back to the moment by steadying our breath, we ask the mind to sit up. If the mind were a dog, it should have its ears pricked….Working with discrete increments of awareness gives us the ability to separate and define our day-to-day experience as multidimensional…. We stop choosing for or against our experience on the assumption that it should somehow be different than it is. Once we drop these assumptions, we can start choosing to open ourselves to all of our experience, both pleasant and unpleasant. This choice allows us to become intimate with the breadth and depth of our humanity.”

    Here’s to incremental awareness.

    Hi Christine,

The Sheri McConnell quote is awesome! Sometimes it takes a bit of tension in our lives to get to the point of really evaluating where we’re at. And that is a very good thing…

  • Liz Rotundo

    Hi Christine,

Great quotes! I came across one yesterday that I want to share. It’s from Wally Lamb and was in an article on Oprah.com about non-fiction workshops he runs at a women’s prison. Here’s my favorite part:

“Michelangelo, the 16th-century artistic genius, once said this about his work: ‘I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.’

…you and I are damaged angels-in-waiting who have the potential to sculpt our best selves with the aid of paper and pen.

The rehabilitative power of our words invites us to test our still-wet wings, tentatively at first and then with greater and greater assurance. And, as that happens, we rise above the concrete and razor wire of painful memories, baffling personal mysteries, and imprisoning secrets. Our load lightens, our perspective changes. We fly away.”

    ~Wally Lamb
