You Don't Have to Know HOW - Christine Kane

gps2Picture this:

You’re going on a road trip.

You get in your car.

You punch your destination address into the GPS.

You hit “ENTER.”

Outta nowhere, your GPS speaks up:

“GEEZ-ZUHS!  Do you have any idea how LONG that’s gonna take?

And seriously – how EXACTLY do you think we’re gonna get there, huh?

Look at where you are now.  Look at it, will you please?!

Who do you think is gonna pay for us to get all the way over THERE?

I don’t know why you’re even bothering, really.  I mean, you’ve never gone there before!  How exactly are you going to pull this one off, missy?

Have you Lost. Your. Freakin’. Mind???”

——————-

Ask yourself this:

If every single dream, goal and vision ever created by anyone began with INTENTION

And if you KNOW you can create your desires and dreams with INTENTION,

(If you’ve been reading this blog for four years – then by now you DO know that!)

“¦then why continue to ask HOW it’ll happen?

You’re more advanced than a GPS.

You don’t need to know HOW.

It’ll be shown to you one road at a time.

Christine: In response to …… “Have you ever said anything like this to yourself? …

As soon as I can just FIGURE OUT HOW to do this, I’ll be unstoppable!

    Or…

If I could only FIGURE OUT what I’m supposed to do next, I’ll…

Here’s a secret I want to share with you:

    There’s nothing to “figure out!”

If you haven’t done so already, you must watch “KUng Fu Panda”………. based on your last line, I can practically guarantee that you’ll resonate with it!!!

Gee…and I’ve come to rely on my GPS…even when it tells me to go in circles!!!

Not sure I’m more advanced than a GPS, some of those things are pretty clever.

“It’ll be shown to you one road at a time.” Good post, and I love your point about the multiple forks “are to keep you focused on what YOU want”.

I’ve been using “RE-NAVIGATING” for awhile now, when my thoughts or habits get me off track. It’s refreshingly quick and judgement free.

Wow so simple, so true! And what a great visual-every time I use my GPS I’ll be reminded that we don’t have to know how we will get there-you just need to have a clear destination! Thanks Christine!

    Isn’t that the truth!

Where is the excitement, the thrill, the adventure, if you knew EXACTLY how everything will work out? The whole trip will be boring.

What a great illustration! 🙂 I really enjoyed your blog post.

This is a concept I also struggle with, but I’m working on trusting myself and my creativity. In fact, I wrote a post just recently in a similar vein.

    Hi Christine!

I showed this to my hubby last night (he *loves* his GPS!) and not only did he love it, he said something that really moved me. He said, you know I have never taken a class with Christine, but I have learned so much from her. It was so sweet and heartfelt.

He had just spent a day deleting game demos and clips from his Playstation so his Digital Media would be full of Absolute Yeses and he was So Proud!

We were both gleaming together. You have helped us bring our inner light out from underneath all the clutter. Thank you Christine!

    Hey Christine:

Great post…great point. I mean I don’t have a GPS and 95% of the time, I have no problems getting to where I need to go. So it makes sense that we don’t need know every road to our ultimate goal. I can’t help thinking about the lyrics to Right Outta Nowhere…”leap and the net will appear.” Anyhow, thanks for making sense at a time when I need it.

It is happening to me right now. I am in transition into a new role – not quite there yet but it’s coming – and I’ve had time to reflect on what I do an don’t want, what will be truest to my essential self in this next role. I am so much clearer on the what that the how is just happening…not just with my day job but with my writing and volunteer positions helping other women at IBM, at my college, friends. New possibilities are coming out of the woodwork for me all of a sudden – when I took the time to show up, be fully present, set intentions before each conversation. At the beginning, I set an intent to help more women and it’s happening – one of my college friends is now doing UYL, the photographer from our wedding has just started UYB and a FB friend from HS is inspired by my clarity and I’m hoping she’ll soon join our ranks as well. My client wants to partner more on women’s events and invited me and my colleagues that support the account to a session where their new female CEO is keynoting. Thank you for this post at this time in this moment.

Love this, thank you. It is so important to have faith in the process, to take that first step and trust that the next one will follow. It is about trusting that the process will guide you, which is difficult to remember at times.

Well said — we don’t plant our gardens in the spring and wonder “how will they grow” … we plant, we sow, we water, weed…and trust the how will take care of itself

  • inge

tell you something else, I don’t even have a GPS!
I trust me to get there =)

    Christine & Mindful Mimi,

    Thank you both.

I have felt frozen in place since my father passed away within 4 months of his cancer diagnosis less than a year ago. I felt totally blindsided by the rapidity of of the events. In my grief I lost sight of my goals & intentions. Instead of being driven to action I stopped moving.

I’ve played that neurotic, insecure, self-defeating GPS-talks-back tape in my head a lot, feeling unable to stop it. And wondering how I was going to get myself out of it, worrying about every single step along the way, therefore not taking any steps at all.

    I needed both these messages.

    Thank You!

wait a second… based on what your GPS said when you punched in the coordinates… is my ex-wife in your GPS?

  • Tessa

    Thanks for the reminder Christine!

Not only do we not have to know how but I try to remind myself I don’t even have to focus on what it’s going to look like when I get there.

Sometimes by just easing up on how it’s gotta look when I get there helps me keep my intention going. I mean I do like tall and dark but the handsome could be optional? 😉

  • Emma

Awesome! And so true. How often does our own “self talk” act like the GPS? Although, I do think it would be fun if the literal GPS was a little sassy. Or had a nice British accent.

  • Laura

That’s been THE lesson for me. Moving forward when you only know the destination, and maybe one step of the way, was one of the huge breakthroughs I got from you Great Big Dreams program. Now I’m living it and teaching it to my own clients! Thanks for the reminder.

  • Christine Kane

thanks all ! nice additional thoughts (as usual!)

miranda – maybe the message is deeper than just a “bad review..”??? i remember at the retreat that you are really heading out on a different path – so i suppose i would say to you: “what are you intending?” rather than “geez. sorry you got a bad review. what did they say?” 🙂

jesann – the multiple forks are to keep you focused on what YOU want. there’s no wrong choice there – but always ask which one is in ABSOLUTE alignment with your intention.

  • Julie

Great post Christine and so timely for me.

Thank you mindful mimi – such a powerful clip to watch and so right is the message.

  • Jesann

Nice. I had a major bout of “how the hell is that gonna happen” this week. Much of what’s going through my mind for the past couple of days has consisted of thinking “Let the universe handle the how” over and over.

(I just wish the roads the universe shows me didn’t have multiple forks.)

  • Mindful Mimi

    Christine,
I just had my annual review at work yesterday which did not go that well, have just watched this inspiring video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gePQuE-7s8c&feature=player_embedded
and now this message from you…
I will stop worrying about the how right now 🙂
    Thanks
    M

I love this post… just the reminder I needed to hear!
…and for some reason it reminds me of that line in the movie What About Bob…. when Bob says to himself
“What if I’m looking for a bathroom, I can’t find one, …. Bob Wiley: [to himself] … baby steps get on the bus, baby steps down the aisle, …”
