Rethinking What Finding a Purpose Really Means
When it comes to finding a purpose for your life, how do you know if you’ve found it? Are you waiting for a sign of some kind? Like a bolt of lightning, out of nowhere? Will it come from an oracle? Or a divine whisper in the winds?
If you’re searching for something, like finding a purpose, you’re basically acting as though it’s outside of you. You’re treating your purpose like it’s outside of your heart, outside of your soul, and outside of your grasp.
So, let’s just go ahead and scrap that notion.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a business and life coach, it’s that YOU hold the answers. Seriously. You are the oracle; you are the divine voice. And while it’s true that you hold the answers to finding a purpose for your life, most of us need help getting there. Some truths are harder to uncover than others.
Finding a Purpose by Taking Stock
When it comes to finding a purpose, you need to mine your life for the things that bring you joy and happiness.
What makes me feel alive?
What am I good at?
What do I love to do?
What makes me happy?
It helps if you write your answers down on paper. Because, like most things, the trick to finding a purpose, YOUR purpose, is to get clear on what you want. Once that comes into view, you can make a plan for how to go after it, and start actually LIVING your purpose.
Finding a Purpose, and Answering the Call
When I looked at finding a purpose for my life’s work, I realized how much I loved connecting with women in my audience after performing on stage. There was something soul-stirring that happened in those exchanges, and a real connection blossomed between the work I was doing as a singer-songwriter and sharing my truth, and my passion for helping women unlock their own passions. It was like the light bulb went off! Soon after, I began facilitating women’s retreats each year, and the momentum just grew.
At the time, if you’d have told me that I would end up being a mentor to women who are changing the world, I wouldn’t have believed you. Sure, I knew that finding a purpose was important to me and to others, but it wasn’t until I connected the dots between what I really wanted to do with my life, and then answered the call by taking the leap and making it happen, that it all fell into place.
Finding a Purpose by Envisioning the Possibilities
Looking back, it’s funny, because finding a purpose, for me, ended up being a process of helping people like you find YOUR true purpose. Once it all clicked, my whole life changed. When you’re in the zone, or in the flow of what you’re meant to be doing, it just works, and it brings you happiness and fulfillment in a way that nothing else can.
(Not that it can’t be hard. Trust me, I have bad days just like everyone else.)
