How to Find Purpose Without Worrying About It
Here’s how a lot of people try and figure out how to find purpose in their lives…
Desire for freedom? Check!
Now, I get it. To a lot of people (including some of my clients, at least at first), even thinking about how to find purpose feels scary.
So you hole up with the fear (that nasty little voice that keeps you feeling stuck), thinking…
But, I don’t know how to find purpose…
Does that mean I don’t have one?
I guess it’ll come to me some day…
Okay. Stop right there.
Here’s the thing: how to find purpose doesn’t just come to you. You have to take steps to figure it out. It’s YOUR purpose, after all. No one else can retrieve it for you. But it’s there (even if it’s buried deep!): a big ol’ sleeping giant.
You have to be willing to stop acting small.
You can’t be scared to wake that giant up!
How to Find Purpose, Step One: You’re Doing It Now!
What if I told you it’s no mistake that you found your way to here today?
Whether you consciously realize it or not, you’re ready to step into something bigger, and something better than you’ve ever imagined.
Because, the thing is, how to find purpose, YOUR purpose, is all about YOU. It’s about your awareness, your passions, and your place in this world. It’s about living from a place of power and being willing to listen to your inner guidance.
So, congratulations! (And mega high-fives.) You’ve already done the first step. You’re here, and that tells me you’re ready to dig deeper into how to find purpose.
Now, let’s keep going!
How to Find Purpose, Step Two: Own It
Here’s a little trick to help you figure out how to find purpose in your life. What I want you to do is take out three pieces of paper. Write one of these headings on each of the pages:
1) My Skills
2) My Talents
3) My Passions
Now, fill the page with whatever comes to mind. Throw it all out there. What are you good at? What do you love? Don’t censor yourself, and don’t over think it. Keep that pen moving!
Look at everything you’ve written. Ask yourself:
What makes you come ALIVE?
Circle the words or ideas that really stand out; this will bring clarity to the question of how to find purpose. Now think about how you can link these ideas.
And keep one of my favorite quotes from Howard Thurman in mind…
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.”
See, when I was a full-time performer, I stumbled upon how to find purpose when I realized how much I LOVED connecting with the women in my audience after the show and helping them discover their own passion. So, I began facilitating women’s retreats each year.
I share this with you so you’ll understand that the only limits here are in your head. (Believe me, there wasn’t a lot of support in the music biz for a songwriter doing personal growth retreats. It was a combination of things that only I loved.) Don’t limit yourself!
Connect the dots.
The answer is there, in your writing.
You just have to be brave enough to see it.
